Dwarf Hamsters Breeding Like Mice!

nz Jun 09, 2003 04:21 PM

My huge female did it again in less than a month! She gave birth to four babies last month and started mating right after. That was her first time breeding, she has such great genes. This time around she gave birth to eight little beauties! Two or three are albinos, I'll make sure later, don't want to disturb them too much. I wouldn't be surprised if she has 12 next time. She is on her way to breaking the record.

Glad to hear....mine are equally doing as well. Although mine are consistantly around 6 heads in several of my females litters. What are you feeding your hamsters out of curiosity? Did you intend to get them as pets or feeders?

Thanks, glad to hear yours are doing well too. I feed them Nutro dog food with veggies, nuts, and bread. I initially got a pair to breed for feeders since they don't smell nearly as bad as my mice. However, they are so darn cute I can't feed them to my snakes...lol. So now I have a whole bunch of them running around and breeding like crazy. I checked on the new babies today and two of them are albinos. It's amazing to watch them take care of their young, they are so smart and have so much personality.

The ones my son had could have worked for the Red Cross.

that its like mice, if you handle them young they get tame, if not when you pick them up by the tail they'll swing back and bite you!

Perhaps, but they were pretty good till they started to breed, as I remember. Also, perhaps some breed lines are more tame than others>

when they start breeding the females' hormones are all over the place! They first start to bite when they are a couple of days away from giving birth. They sometimes even get vicious towards the males and turn him away for a couple of days after birht. The male however never has this problem though, they are always nice ands calm.

I have two colonies that aren't tame because I just can't hold and pet every mouse I have but I have one colony where every one of them has been held a lot and tamed as hoppers/runners. I start out by holding them just before their eyes open and they tame real nice. If I see one in one of the other colonies that I really like I move it to the nest in the tame colony and let them finish raising it once it's eyes open. I can't add a newcomer, male or female, to either of the other two colonies but the tame group seems to accept any young animal I introduce!

I had two shaggy mice pop up in a liter the last time I was ready to start a new colony and retire an old one. There was a male and a female so I put them in two separate colonies. The female has popped out a few with semi-long hair and so has the male, but still none with the long hair. The last litter the female produced had a really nice looking female, white with Grey rump, who has the long coat. I moved her to the male's colony which is also the tame colony. They all accepted her just as I figured they would, and now I'm looking forward to seeing what they produce.

These are supposed to be snake and dragon food! I'm becoming an addict! Somebody needs to start a Breeders Anonymous group!

I don't care what animal you pick, they all get under your skin and we all have our favorites! I am actually having more fun with my stinky mice than with the rats but I need larger prey for my bulls!

Sorry for the ramble, but someone has to stand up for the smelly little darlings!
