Maggie - milkweed bugs

lele Feb 22, 2004 02:03 PM

Hi Maggie,

Do I recall a post of yours that you were going to raise mw bugs? Even with sunflower seeds you cannot be assured of a totally toxin free insect for at least one generation. But my question is: why bother? They have little "meat" on them and do not see them as a very substantial food source. Just curious as to why you chose these? On a personal note, I have had these as pets, too

Well, hi there Lele-where ya been? How's beautiful Luna? Yeah, MW bugs. A post of mine had some discussion on it. Well, it turns out that we Dart froggers are always looking for some varied source of tiny foods and there's never enough that we can raise successfully. I was thinking about these to provide my Darts with more food sources, not as a staple(hard to get the 2nd gen going). I will probably aquire the parent gen from other Dart Froggers to ensure cleaner non toxic source(thanks for footnoting that in my mind). Pea Aphids were not too successful, but I'm probably gonna try again. I was mainly thinking about these things again as I'm thinking about raising the Mantids for the Chams! Man, who'd a thought I'd have to do the whole food chain to feel like I'm giving my herps a good chance. Next, I'm building some termite traps on some of my properties in unsprayed rural areas! I'm turning out to own more insects then the herps I meant to keep!! Good to talk/write to you! Maggie
