Looking into getting a rainbow boa...

CatBlu Feb 22, 2004 02:57 PM

Me and my roommate are interested in getting a rainbow boa, but as of yet, do not know a lot about them. If anyone could answer these questions, that would be great.

Size of cage?
Temperment?
How often to feed?
What to feed (frozen? live?)
Substrate?

And anything else that may be helpful.

Size of cage? - the size of the cage is all about the size of the snake. the bigger the snake the bigger the cage. i am a firm believer that the bigger the size the better. also, make sure you have branches that the snake can climb on.

Temperment? some say the babies can be nippy and everything, but i had never had a problem with mine. she never even tried to bite me. just try and handle it as much as you can so if it is nippy it calms down and if it is calm, to keep it calm. also, make sure when you buy the snake, it is captive born and handled.

How often to feed? i feed every week to a week and a half, depending on the snake. you'll figure out how often you should feed your snake. every snake is different but i feed mine every week to a week and a half.

What to feed (frozen? live?) both are fine. i feed mine live. if you feed frozen make sure you dont wash the mouse smell of. take it out of the freezer and just let it thaw.

Substrate? i use paper towels. anything on the lines of paper towles, newspaper is fine. i had even saw a towel as a supstrate. anything to hold the humidity is great except anything that can cut them or they can swallow.

And anything else that may be helpful - all in one, they are great snakes and the most beautiful ( in my opinion ). they are a lot of fun to. if your using a screen top cage cover 90-95% of it to keep in the humidity. always have a waterbowl big enough for the snake to soak in.

IF ANYONE CAN CORRECT ME ON THE TOWEL FOR THE SUBSTATE. i seen it before. is it a good idea or no

welcome to the forum, any other questions, just ask. everyone on this forum is nice and very knowledable.

What are phases?

Jeff Clark Feb 22, 2004 04:22 PM

CatBlu,
. BRBs are highly variable in color and pattern. They range from light orange to red-orange to red to reddish brown to brown. Some have no crescents on the sides while some have very large bright colored crescents. BRBs from the same litter can be very different in color and pattern. Some people apply the term phase to describe naturally occuring color and pattern variations.
