concern with shower curtain encloser

desaix Feb 22, 2004 03:16 PM

Hello,
I just finished "building" a new enclosure for one of my blue tongued skinks. What I did was take the frame from a reptarium (the mesh terrariums) and duct taped pieces of clear shower curtain around it. I did this to limit the drafts in her cage. My concern is that the plastic smells plasticy. Does anyone know if this will be a health risk?
Thanks!
Kate

not only would i be concerned with the air quality in this situation, but also what the heat would do to the thin plastic shower curtain walls. i am sure you have some type of heating source in the cage whether it is a heat mat or heat light, and i am worried if that could melt the shower curtain or make it smell worse. if i were you i would take exact measurements of the cage and go to home depot and get some pieces of lexan or plexiglass, even thin ones, and use that in place of the shower curtain.

Well, the heat light is not really a problem because it hangs on a stand into the cage and is about 4 inches away from the plastic on all sides. I was told from a pet store that vinyl isn't really a problem, but the shower curtain could have been sprayed with chemicals to keep mildew away. Anyway, she's back in her old cage for the time being until this can all be sorted out. The reason that I don't want to use plexiglass is that I'm looking for something that I can take apart really easily for travel, and would be really light. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
