Thinking of getting a uro.

Dedalus Feb 22, 2004 03:18 PM

I've been looking around for a new pet and Uro's sparked my interest. I was just wondering what the size difference is between species, I know the egyptian is the largest. I'm looking at a mali or a sahara, what size enclosure should I have for 1? and for a pair?

Forgot to ask, but I'm assuming a commercial reptarium has to much ventilation to hold the required heat for a uro.

To find out the stuff u need for a uro go to www.deerfernfarms.com this is where i bought my mali uro, it will tell u all the info u need on uros, also he will sell u one. Also uros r very great pets, i have never even been bitten or hurt in any way by mine. I keep my one mali in a 50 gallon tank. I wouldn't get one smaller then that for your uro.

Dedalus,

I am just curious....
In this post you are requesting very basic uromastyx information such as the size difference between species and the proper size enclosure. In your next post (two hours later) you feel qualified to give advice to someone else on the advanced issue of uromastyx breeding. I am assuming that you now have all the answers you need due to your miraculous, self given, instantaneous, ‘uromastyx authority’ title?

Not in the slightest, all animals will breed eventually when individuals of the opposite sex are housed together it's common knowledge. If you keep a male and a female of any species together they will eventually breed it's hardwired in all animals to propogate the species.

As for the few hours later, in that time I read every care sheet I could on uro's and added this new information to the information I already have from housing my other herps and made an educated response.

I now know the average sizes of the species as well as the basic husbandry. I'm not claiming to be an expert of any kind I'll leave that up to you breeders. I was just stating my opinion as it is a forum not a communist empire.

Dedarus,

You write: “I was just stating my opinion as it is a forum not a communist empire.”

Let me refresh your memory on your exact words:

“I don't know about the cage size but if you put a female with a male they will breed no question about it.”
“They will breed no matter what you do or do not do.”

I believe that these were stated as facts not as ‘opinions’.

I would like to suggest (as I am not a dictator) that you start off opinions with words such as “in my opinion, I believe, personally I think….” This might help those new to the hobby differentiate between someone who actually owns and is familiar with uromastyx (who is qualified to give facts) from someone that read someone else’s care sheets for two hours.
