A couple questions about tegus...

roachey56 Feb 22, 2004 05:37 PM

Tegus are some of the most interesting lizards i have seen and am wondering if i should get one for my next herp.

1)What size do the different types of tegu get? (Argentine BW, Colombian BW, red, blue)
2)Could i have a Tegu in a bedroom and not a cage?
3)Are tegus easily tamed?
4)Can tegus and very shy non agressive small house cats live together in peace?
5)What are the temperment of tegus?
6)what are some good caresheets about Tegus?
7)what places (other than agamainternational) can i get a CB tegu?
-----
0.1 Albino Leopard gecko (Lex)
0.0.1 ball python (felix)
1.1 feral cats (Fuzzy, and Bear; it used to be fuzzy, wuzzy, bear)

1)What size do the different types of tegu get? (Argentine BW,

Colombian BW, red, blue)
Argentines get up to 5 ft
Columbians about 4-4.5 ft
Reds are about the same size as columbians
Blues get about 3-3.5 ft

2)Could i have a Tegu in a bedroom and not a cage?

I would suggest raising it in a cage, but as they grow they can be house-trained with relative ease.

3)Are tegus easily tamed?

To my knowlege, when small they are a little flighty and bite some, but quickly calm down with persistence with handling.

4)Can tegus and very shy non agressive small house cats live
together in peace?

Its possible... but you would want to be very careful and keep a watchful eye.

5)What are the temperment of tegus?

With handling very docile. Without... not neccesarely mean, but possibly defensive. I would highly suggest having a tame 5 foot lizard rather than an aggressive one.

6)what are some good caresheets about Tegus?

Get some books out of the library, as well as BlueTegu.com and Agama international's is pretty good.

7)what places (other than agamainternational) can i get a CB tegu?

Ron and Stella St. Pierre, lllreptile.

If i get a Tegu it is definitely going to be a blue. I now only have to get a couple hundred $ and convince my mom a 3 foot lizard it cuddly.

At what size will a blue tegu be at 6 months old? 1 year? 18 months? 2 years? assuming it doesn't hibernate.

What should the humidity be for a blue tegu?
Does it really need 1 foot of substate?

I have read a lot of sites and it says the recomended cage size for adult blues, reds, and B&W is 6' by 3' by 2'.
Is that adequet housing for a 4'- 4.5' red or b&W tegu?

My rule of thumb is minimum twice the length of the lizard and once for width. height depends on furnature and heating. So a 4' tegu needs 8' X 4' and enough height that it can dig and climb without getting to close to the heat source to get burned.
