I feel like a forum spammer but Im learning so much =)... Crickets?

newkid Feb 22, 2004 06:32 PM

There has to be an easier way to feed live crickets. I get them in a clear bag of a dozen. I brought them home and dumped maybe 2 in tank for my leo. Then transfered the rest of the crickets to an old small rectangle tupperware with a lid,(holes in top) and moistened a paper towel and put some gutload in one corner of container. When its feeding time I need to "dust" them. So I try to get a couple into a "shake and bake" bag, then let them hop out into tank for the "great hunt". All the while trying not to get the gutload in the tank, and when dumping them out of tupperware, trying not to set them free and get 4 to 5 rather than all 10 or twelve.

Only reason I did two was because it was his first night here. Hes eating 4 to 6 now.

Put some old egg carton in the cricket tank, when you go to feed your leo shake the crickets off the egg carton into the bag. I'd suggest getting a larger cricket enclosure as well maybe an old 5 or 10 gal aquarium, or one of those cheap plastic reptariums.

No you only need a 2 and a half gallon tank. Or you could go the cheapest way out and get a 7 inch deep rubber maid container so that if you leave the lid open while getting the crickets out they cant hop out.

along with egg cartons, toilet paper/paper towel cardboard rolls work as well. crickets hang out on the roll.... I just grab the roll, pinch one end together and shake out as many crickets as needed.

First i got a questions for you. Are you afraid to touch the crickets/ why do you tip over the container? And for the dusting i just have a gallon of milk's cap full of calcium dust that i just dip the crickets into. When i say dip i mean take the cricket my the anus or a jumping leg and brush them against it once or twice and just throw the cricket in.

If you are afraid of the crickets thats even easier to dust because you just get eye brow pluckers and just squeeze any part of the cricket ( not to hard but it doesnt matter just dont close all the way ) and just put them into the cap ( dont let go... ) and just brush them, shake the excess dust off, and drop it into the cage.

Nah not afraid of them, its just that they in such a shallow container they will all go for the great escape if I take the lid off.

So If i get a lil 2 or 5 gal deal to hold them, bout how many do u all keep in there? I was told a websight where I can get 500 at once.

Also do u keep it wet in there and do u keep gut load in there too?

LeopardGeckoMan Feb 22, 2004 09:08 PM

if you keep it in a 2 and a half gallon tank you can fit about 4 dozen in there without them being on top of eachother and without having to use egg cartons and such.

I dont keep keep their container wet. Because one time i just sprayed it because i just moved and i forgot where i put my gutload and well lets just say by the next day all the crickets were dead. They died because they drowned themselves =(.
So i finally found my gutload and put that in now so i try to stay away from using water in their little rubbermaid container.

Also howmany leos do you have?

Get a 2 or 2.5gal buy them about 100 at a time. Wet sponge for water and gutload etc etc. Use egg carton whenever you can it makes transferring the crix to the bag/dusting container 100 times easier and it makes crix hides so they don't eat each other as much. Dump in 5 - 10 at a time dust and feed your good to go.
