lele Jun 09, 2003 04:56 PM

I keep hearing about it but don't understand what the heck it is. how is it packaged? is it a good idea? I don;t put any water in with my crix, figure they get enough moisture from fruit and veges. Anyone use this EW?

Lele-

It is a gel based water source, that I think is a waste of money, fruits/veggies work much better! Stick with what you are doing. Hope this helps!

I did too until I used it. it lasts longer that fruit, and doesn't rot. It's kind of a waste of money, though, and only worth it itf you buy it cheap, like in bulk.. HOWEVER....if you can get a hold of some agar flakes, you can make your own gel, and add supplements, like fruit juice. so it'll last longer than the fruit, and is more convienent. I find it very convienent, especially if you reuse it, just add water to the dired bits, and it's like new. I still use fruit, but I keep it in ther just in case I forget...I have lost so many bugs that way in the past...

Eric - I have access to agar b/c I use it in herbal stuff. Can you tell me what your recipe is? I am thinking that anytime I go away (not often) it will be one less thing for a sitter to worry about. thanks!

I have NOT been able to locate agar yet, so I have not used this myself. I haven't really looked at an herbal shop yet. I still have some gel stuff left, and I will really look for agar when that runs out.

here's the link to the recipe...it looks like an awesome idea. How much does Agar cost, by the way?

Eric,

here is one of many online sites where you can get it. Depending on where you live if you have any natural food store, herbal apothecary, etc. that sell bulk herbs you should be able to get it there in the quantity you want - cheap. If not, Penn Herb is a reputable company. I am more familiar with the powder and that's what you will usually find. The recipe is certainly easy! I'll let you know when I try it Thanks!
where to buy Agar Agar

thanks, I'm going to check a local asian market, supposedly, it's about 5 times cheaper than at a health food store(Big surprise!)
If I can't find it, I'll order it.
