I walked into my local salvation army and found a tall entertainment center and had any idea. Flip it on its side andf cup open the shelfs as to make in one full shelf, while keeping stability. It is the old crappy firbe board and not in the best shape, but after a sanding and a coat of latex paint it should be perfect,, woulf this work?

What is the back made of? most of the "crappy" wood enclosures have weak backs. Also I think the animal/s you keep in it could sway on the decision.

I agree with Randy that the species you're considering for this cage is an important consideration.

Also, since the back is probably flimsy as Randy said it might be worth it to install your own solid back. If you put in an upper and lower lip to support glass track you probably would not need the shelves at all for support. Maybe one center support depending on the length of the unit. I forgot to look and see if you had measurements on your diagram.

But I'm not sure if I understood that part.

If the reptiles that you are going to keep in the enclosure require any type of misting or water, the fiber board will eventually soak up the water and expand(water will weaken the adhesive that binds the particle board together).

Hope this helps,

Even a tipped water bowl could make for problems! At the very least, you'd probably want to caulk all around the bottom edges. Better would be to seal the floor somehow. You could go with contact paper (a la Greg Maxwell) or PVCX (a la Chris Harper)...
