Jamie,

UV should penetrate screen...all my diurnal lizards have screen lids with UV bulbs resting on the top of them and ive had no MBD or growth problems. UV wont penetrate GLASS at all, which is why jsut having your cage near a window wont work, but as far as i know it penetrates screen just fine. Thats why we reccomend screen lids for reptile tanks where i work.

Someone correct me if im wrong, by all means!

Hope that helps,
Another Jamie

uv penetrates screen just fine, thats why chameleon cages are made of screen, and to allow air flow.

but yes it will go threw it just fine, the screen on my cage is very similar to window screening
