2/22/04 Florida

Havn't had much time to get out in the field lately... Got out for about 21/2 hours today. Temps in the low 80's, 80% humidity and partly cloudy. Collected 6 Red Rats, 1-Yellow Rat X Everglades, Blk. Racers, garters and about 150 cuban Tree Frogs. We saw plenty of Fla. Softshells, Redbellys and Cooters. Typical Anolis ssp. and the usual alligators. Plenty of stuff starting to move. The Everglades/Yellow cross was interesting. About a 51/2-6' male. Retaining dorsal blotches and orange background with dark well developed striping. Just figured I'd share. If someone can tell me how to attach pics here I'll post them.. The Red's we get here are gorgeous... Orange background with red blotches. On a side note came across a DOR Eastern Hognose and a yearling Eastern Diamondback DOR from this morning. Thanks Ray G. HBR

Bye the way, hows the bankslider pops holding up? Enough to keep the Corns nervous?

You mean these....

And these.... lol's!! Yeah, in our area the populations are doing fine. Most of the males move in Fall. I've seen about 25 in the last 2 months. a budy of mine came across about a 6' female near a burn about 2 days ago. Got some nice pics.. Also an Eastern Diamondback about 51/2' that was 100 yards or so away.I can find the Scarlet's just about year round. just have to know where to look. The Fl. Kings have been moving for about 11/2 months now. The way the commercial collectors have slammed the Fl. King populations in S. Fl. it's amazing that they continue to survive in the densities they do....Cottonmouths will be abundant or at least easier to collect in about 1-2 months when the rains hit or during the dry season.

Call em bank sliders Ray....sayin' indi will tip off the FGC biologists. Up untill now, they thought those were fat Coluber's.

PS...the north florida sk season should be in full peak....if ya know where to look!

LOL's!! Yeah we also have those big "Florida water lizards"!!!!
SK's "Appalach..." Alabama has some real hot spots for them as well!

herpdoc133 Feb 25, 2004 10:24 PM

We always just called em "swamp dragons". As to the SK's...I was refering to potato country in the north end of the State. Those potato's grow em big there too....I've found 2 that were just over 27 inches and one 28 incher. Also found a 29 inch DOR and a shed that measured 32 inches....probably from an animal close to 30. Of course I've never seen any bank sliders or getulus in that area.....could that be why they get so big?

I've found that certain areas devoid of large opiophagous species do have larger specimens. I've gotten 11 over 27 inches in our area over the last two years alone.
