What to do with unwanted venoms snakes?

budding_writer Feb 23, 2004 08:51 AM

Hi all:

I am in the D.C. area and I have four snakes. I already gave away my ball pythons. Now I have 1 BB copperhead and 3 pigmy rattle snakes that I want to give away. I know I can't release them into the wild because I would be releasing disease into the wild.

I am at a loss as to what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to Euthanize as my neighbor did to his unwanted Burmese.

Does D.C. zoo or something have something? I know usually zoos wont take animals.

desparately seeking help.

as you can see the snakes are still in good health. However, I am doing the minimal now to keep them alive and clean.

I am curator of a successful wildlife center featuring venomous herps. I am also a member of AZA (American Zoo and Aquarium Association) and we have a listserve that has been used to link private individuals in need of finding homes with zoo professionals. If you drop me an email with your contact information, I would be happy to post this on the forum.

Or does it not strike anyone odd that he is just doing the "minimum to keep them alive and clean"?? I don't want to start a flame with this, but if you are going to acquire an animal and then later down the line decide to get rid of it, at least keep them the same way you have been until such a time as someone can take it/them off your hands. Is it fair to the animal to treat it any worse just because you have decided you no longer want it? It, after all, did not choose to be in your care. And, if you are going to treat them with the bare minimum to keep them alive, please do not post this on an open forum. It makes you sound, well, less than a good or even serious keeper. I am honestly quite surprised that no one has jumped on this yet. There are numerous free classifieds sites around the internet. Trust me here, posting an ad for free snakes will get you responces in minutes. I won't list any of the sites here because some are restricted from being talked about on these forums, but just take a look around. Good luck with them, and I hope they go to a good, more permanent, home.

You should never take an animal in and then not care for it. These guys arent humans and kept in a cage, cant do anything to maintain their wellbeing! That is why I wrote him and said I would drive 5 hrs to take them off of his hands. He never replied however.

For once I hope a dealer scooped them up. Atleast then they would get some care untill they were sold to a keeper who wanted them.

Just goes to show how downhill this hobby is going.

Welp, the agreements over.
