jackson cages

HerpGirl Feb 23, 2004 10:06 AM

i have never posted here and i probably wont be able to reply for a while but i was printing care sheets on jacksons profusely and some of them said about using tanks. i also no of some breeders that take tanks and sit them on the end to make them vertical... does any1 no how to accomplish this? i cant think of any way put lights on it if it were glass on the top. by the way, ventilation would not be an issue. i also was wondering if anyone has any plans for a jacksons cage, nothing elaborate(sp.) just adequate, with all of my other herps i cant afford to spend alot of money building designer cages, im sure some of you no what i mean! thanks for all of your help.

Avoid tanks. You really should invest in a cage. Tanks cause various problems, and contribute to stress in your Chameleon. I have a 24"x24"x48" PVC coated wire cage with 1/4" spacing, and my Jackson's couldn't be happier. Avoid fine mesh (window screen) cages. They pull out toenails. Here is one place I like that sells quality, affordable cages:

Best of luck.

I did the verticle cage thing for my first chameleon i ever got...lets jsut say i was petless in a week. The glass causes all kinds of heating problems and the ventilation is very much an issue. I had a beautiful carpet chameleon and i never got to see its nice colors becasue it was always black from stress. get the mesh type cages they arent that expensive at all and my jacksons love them. if you know of breeders who use glass tanks i would question their credibility. Glass tanks kill trust me

The whole tank idea is definetly a nono as the last message said, and one thing i discovered when i build my own cham cage: easy, cheap, and good for your cham.

I went out today and spent about 120$ canadian on supplies for 2 4'x2'x2' enclosures for veileds.

It is much cheaper than buying an enclosure, it is very easy to do even without plans (just use common sense, you really don't need plans unless you have some sort of disability to build things).
Unless you already have the tank buying a tank dwarfs the cost of a screen enclosure made from scratch. Just do some shopping around and get the right things to build with and you're all set. It will only take a couple hours a day to build for a few days, shorter if you're good at building things.

when i built a cage for my veilds, i bought an old dresser from an auction for about $30. i worked on it for like a week before it was done. it wasn't hard at all and my cham's seem to be happy in it.
