Dangers or lack of

I finally got the tank complete and we're working on the temps now. So far my idea for an under tank heater is working really well at stabilizing the temps over night. So now we're having second thoughts about the dragon. Although I've read just about every published report about lizards and their safety there is still some concern about the lizard passing some form of bacteria like salmonella to the kids, 6 & 8, who are really bad about washing their hands.

Forgetting what the reports may have said, what is the "real world" experience with bacteria and how concerned should we be?

I would say you have a much better chance of getting it in your kitchen than from your lizard. I have never actually known anyone that has contracted salmonella from a dragon but I sure have known a few that have got it from resteraunts. The chance is there, just low. If it helps keep a bottle of that antibacterial hand rub no-wash stuff next to the cage and when they put it away all they have to do is hit the pump.
