Breeding without brumnation

danread Feb 23, 2004 11:08 AM

Hi,

I was just wondering if it's possible that Collareds might breed without going through brumnation? I only got my pair of C.bictinctores a few months a go, and they weren't in the best condition, so i've been fattenig them up rather that risk brumnating them this winter. Recently the male, who has grown a lot and is lookig loads better, has been trying to mate with the female. How do i know if she is receptive or not? Is it likely that she could become gravid without brumnation? Thank you.

Dan.

my first pair did breed, but i might also point out that all were infertile. If there still pretty skinny id leave it be just now and concentrate on getting em in tip top condition.Egg production takes alot out of females, more so than you can imagine,my bluestar female, went from being a little bulldog to a bag of bones after her second clutch and im afraid to say in my inexperience i left her with the male and she died of eggbinding, although i managed to save the eggs, only one went full-term only to die on me at hatching timeSo be careful and dont put any unecessary stress on herHope this answers your Q

brumating. I hatched out a couple. Last ones died I believe due to temp flucuation. But they were perfectly formed.

Anyway she was not brumated, that was my point and her eggs were fine. Although her mate Zuni DID sleep, about a month.

So I think it is important atleast for the males.
As I have not had any NON-brumated males breed. Only females.

But Good luck anyway, with your Bicinctore, very cool lizards,

Eve
