Need help

antares Feb 23, 2004 11:22 AM

Hi, in a few days I'll be taking a bearded dragon in as a rescue and need to find out as much as I can about them. I already have a Argentine B&B Tegu so I'm not new to lizards. I know nothing about the bearded that I'm getting yet, so any general questions that could be answered would be great.

What do they eat? How often? Do supplements need to be added to their food? What is the housing size requirement for an adult? What do the temperatures need to be? Humidity? What is the best kind of substrate? What is an ideal set up?

If anyone could answer these questions or add any other help I would appreciate it greatly.

There is much info on the web as far as Bearded Dragon Care. Is this an adult dragon?
Minimum tank requirements would be a 55 Gallon or a 40 breeder tank. Larger is always of course better.
Here's the basics..

Basking temp: 100-105 degrees
Cool end, 85 degrees

Food: Dark leafy greens, crickets, worms. (www.beautifuldragons.com & www.beginnersbasics.com)

UVB Source: Reptisun 5.0 or a Mercury Vapor Bulb
(www.reptiledirect.com)

Suppliments: There are many of these out there.
mainly you want to supply Calcium w/d3 (no phosphorus) and a multi-vitamin.

Substrate: If an adult, you can use washed play sand (not calci-sand), wheat bran or many of us use Duck Brand Shelfliner. You can find that at Walmart.

A digital thermometer will give you accurate temps.

You will need a place for him to bask, rock, branch etc
The cool end should have a half log or some type of hide.

Check out www.beardiecrazy.com for more care info. You can also do a Google search for much more info.

Come on back with any questions or even if you don't have any, let us know how he is doing.
