UV lighting for ackies

danread Feb 23, 2004 11:29 AM

Hi,

I am going to be getting my first pair of yellow ackies early next week, and i have been doing as much research as possible on the information on the net. One thing i have found lots of conflicting opinions is the use of UV light, some people saying its not necessary, some saying it is. What do you all think? I have got a 3 foot 5% UV tube installed in the viv i have set up, because i figured it can't hurt and might benifit them, but i'm not sure if it is necessary or not, especialy if i am dusting their food with vitamin suppliments. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Dan.

I could be wrong but I was always under the impression that monitors do not need UV lighting although it couldn't hurt them.

I am leaning towards that opinion, but i'm not 100% sure due to the fact that they bask at such high temps in direct sunlight. Liek you said, it can't hurt to have it on for at least a few hours a day.

Cheers,

Dan.

Hello, I have been keeping and breeding ackies since 1991/2(eggs in 91, hatched in 92) I have produce and raised many many generations. Our results for growth, reproduction and longevity is amoung the best. Yet, we have never used UV, other then what comes with incandesent and halogen bulbs from the store.

About dusting, that is also misunderstood. If you raise monitors of mice, there is absolutely no need to dust with calicum. If you raise them on crickets, there "is" a absolute need to dust with both vitamins and calicum. What that means is, its merely a lack of calicum in crickets. Because crickets are not a good sole food item, if used, you need to suppliment.

We even had to suppliment a diet of crickets, when we raised the monitors outside in the best UV source on earth.

So no, using UV bulbs in not needed, but again, its only slightly harmful. If the monitors cannot get away from the lite, they can get cataracts. We have had that happen outside, then we covered half the cages and the problem went away. I have heard of that inside, but because we never had a need to use UV bulbs, I have not experienced it.

My major concern with folks using UV bulbs is, they are under a false sense of security. Its calicum in the diet thats important, not the UV that is suppose to be important.

On a side note, I have kept a few monitors for several years now, without any lites and they do not have a problem. (you know, like you would a kingsnake) Some may think that cruel, but, the monitors are doing absolutely better then they were.

Good luck, and listen to the monitors, FR

I could be wrong, but they are basking desert lizards, and that would mean that they receive large amounts of uv in the wild. While I'm sure you can raise them without uv if done properly, I would definetely (if it were me) get at least a 5.0 tube or more likely a mercury vapor bulb. It won't hurt them, and theres a good chance that it will benifit them, as it will be much more natural. I'm not saying that you need it because I don't know and don't have the experience that others in this forum have, but it does seem more natural and if it can benifit them and cant hurt them, why withhold it? Thats just my thoughts. Good luck with your new ackies!
