Heat & humidity tank??s for Balls & Bloods

bundhri Feb 23, 2004 01:00 PM

I'm a fairly new herp owner & am trying to learn the best tank set-up for my snakes.

I have a 60 gal. tank for my 3 balls (all under 1 year old). They have a large 150w day and 150w night light and an under tank heat pad. The temp is about 83-87 degrees for the day & 77-80 degrees at night. Sound about right?? The lid is mesh with clamps.

My 2 baby bloods (1 marble borneo & 1 sumatran) are in about a 30 gal. tank. I just acquired these two on Saturday. They currenlty have small day light & I'm picking up a night light for them today. I've read they should be kept at around 85-90 degrees for basking and lows at 80. The lid for this tank is mesh also. Very small under tank heat pad as well - getting a larger one today. Sound right??

Substrate for both tanks is repti-carpet.

I'm trying to figure out what is best to use to regulate the tank humidity in each of these tanks. I've read the bloods should be at about 50-60% humidity. Any info on what to use would be appreciated. Fountains vs. foggers?? What percentage humidty do they put out? Timers for foggers?? Which has higher risks for humidity getting too high??

Thanks in advance!

First get the snakes into their own cages. a 60 gallon is not near big enough for 3 ball pythons.
Cover the 2/3 of screen with plastic wrap. Then if that doesn't bring humidity up change to a humidity hold substrate.

The balls are all babies, as I listed in my first post, they are only 20" at the longest. So I know they will need separate tanks later, but the tank is plenty big enough for them currenlty. It was suggested specifically for them by a breeder at the show be bought them from. I'll get actual dimension measurments for the tanks tonight to post for better clarification.

We wrapped saran/plastic wrap covering 2/3 of the lids on both tanks yesterday. The ball's humidity seems OK. My questions were more of what to use to regulate higher, but not too high, humidity for the bloods & to confirm the temps for both tanks. We're only getting about 37-40% in the bloods tank with the wrap. We just don't know what kind of system is best. Thanks for your post though.

If your using a UTH in the blood tank i suggest putting a seperate water bowl on it. If that doesn't help try using a humidity holding substrate. If you have a UTH and humidity holding substrate i suggest putting 4 or 5 layes of newspaper on the very bottom of tank so the bloods dont get in direct contact with the UTH.

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions. Balancing out at about 52% humidity. Just right! Your input was very helpful.

Thanks again!
