At last 20 per cent people, mostly young, in different districts of the country died from snake bite during 1999 to 2001, a study revealed in Dhaka on Sunday, reports BSS..
Disclosing findings of the study, conducted on 100,000 people in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Mymensingh districts, Prof. M. Abul Fayez of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said there are 28 species of venomous snakes, 12 of them living in sea, in the country.
Quoting the study, he said that a total of 897 incidents of snake bite were reported during the period in which 350 bites were done by venomous snakes while 547 by non-venomous snake.
“However, 85 per cent victims of snake bite in these districts took treatment from the local ‘Ojha’,” the study said. Snake bites 87 per cent people during the dry season and the rest in winter season, it added.
The study stressed upon modern treatment of the victims of snake bite and suggested increased supply of necessary medicine to all government and non-government hospitals in this regard.
“Snake bite is becoming a threat to public health,” Prof. Fayez said.
