feeding and lighting question from new owner

Lisa197174 Feb 23, 2004 03:37 PM

Hi I own a 2 inch male African albino clawed frog and I have 3 questions please. 1) I feed him floating sticks which he LOVES but feel I should give him some variety. What can I give him that FLOATS to vary his diet a little. He cannot find food on the bottom so it has to float. Im finding it hard to find something.2) Where can I get a another frog his size for company? The pet stores only have tiny ones and I dont want to set up another tank to raise up a baby until its his size.I feel guilty hes alone. 3) I have him in a tank that has a lighting unit on it however I do not turn it on because it seems to bother him. He is in a room that gets alot of sunlight (not direct light, he is across the room from the windows)Is this enough? Do they HAVE to have the electric light source? Thanks for the help,Lisa

They don't need any supplementary light in the room you've described. Mine have done superb in room temperature water. You may want a small water heater with a temp. gage. Most importantly get a book on keeping aquatic frogs. They are more credible than most internet information and are generally more detailed. Depending on the size of your frog, you can have feeder fish (guppies, minnows) kept with him. He may not be the best at catching them, but the stimulus is great and healthy and when successfull it is a great supplementation.
Keeping more than one frog isn't necessary for there mental health unless you bring male to female together and plan to breed them. (get the book first)

Thanks for your reply! I actually do have a heater in there as well and it is set at 77 degrees. As far as keeping the small fish with him, I havent done that because I heard you can make the frog sick if it got an unhealthy one. Any kind of regular floating food as a supplement you can think of? Like I said I currently give the floating sticks.

I have 4 ACF's and mine really love smelt. I defrost it and feed it to them in pieces with a pair of long tweezers. The biggest one freddie will take it right from my fingers. They also get reptomin and their are feeder guppies in their tank which I am not sure if they eat or not.
