Brown anole vs. Green anole

triturus Feb 23, 2004 03:51 PM

Have any of you ever noticed that brown anoles seeem to endure the rigors of pet store life better than green anoles? Often, I see a group of anoles stuffed in a ten gallon tank; the green anoles are often emaciated, while the brown anoles are relativly plump and active, biting when removed from there enclosure and reacting fast to stimuli, such as food or predators. The green just sit there and rarely bite when handled.

Yep- they're over running the native species in FL as well. At one location (just outside of Tampa, FL) I counted approximately 20 Browns to every Green I saw. They don't seem to be as wary as Greens and I guess that agressiveness alows them to get better access to food and nesting sites. I'm not surprised that they take over the tank at the pet store.
