Packing on the pounds for breeding!!!

Thomas j Jun 09, 2003 06:31 PM

My burms laid a bunch of duds this year. Now i am trying to get over it and get her weight up. I am feeding her piglets. I feed her 5 a week and i wil do this until it is time to start cooling or until i think she is getting to fat. Does this sound like a bad idea.

Why would you pack on the pounds for breeding?? According to your adoption application for a burmese:

"Plans for breeding::

I do not plan to breed this animal. It would bwelike adding fuel to the fire."

Strange.... why would you add fuel to the fire??

Not to start anything but he did say "burms" which would indicate more than one female. Whats to say that its not the same animal?
This is assuming that I am understanding whats going on with this thread.

This is a touchy subject (breeding normal burms) and I am reluctant to comment on it, but you have a very good point. There is no way to tell that those were the same snakes. Were DNA tests done that verified that those were the same individuals? I totally doubt it. And Bonnie, you can be a little less rude to people in your posts too.
But that issue asside, I personally don't advocate the breeding of normal phase burmese. There are too many and all it does is just add to the existing problem. But at the same time there is the very troubling fact that burmese are still imported. It is very confusing to me at times and I sometimes wonder what is the lesser of two evils. And I wonder if cheap captives could ever put a stop to cheap imports. But at the same time I worry about the consequences to the wild populations and what would happen to them if they could not be sold to the pet trade. Another member (Tango) once pointed out that the likelyhood was great that the same snakes might then be sold to the leather trade industry. I saw the possibility as a very valid one and wondered if importing them wasn't so bad then. Needless to say I just wish they would be left alone period, but of course we all know that isn't likely to happen. But there are SO many variables in this subject and it isn't so cut and dry, I'm afraid. But my common sense tells me that it is not good to produce more of a thing that is already overproduced. My advice to you Tom would be to keep those as pets and invest a few hundred into a more popular and less plentiful morph and breed those. Trust me, you don't want to be stuck with 40 to 80 hungry mouths and no one to sell them to. Or even worse you probably don't want it on your conscience that you had to dump them for 25 each to substandard homes where they ultimately end up dead.

No, I don't think you understood - but I wasn't terribly clear, either.. The message was more for him, as I knew he should understand my point. While I would get some satisfaction out of clarifying, I won't. Let's just say that actions speak louder than words.

PS - I wasn't intending to be rude to anyone....

Im assuming that he adopted a burm from your rescue service and part of the agreement was that he NOT breed the adopted animal. He agreed to that provision and was given the snake. He subsequently posts about his breeding failure and you post about his agreeing to not breed the snake.
Is that correct?

(PS - I agree that normals should not bred either. Grab yourself a couple of albinos het for "stuff" and let er rip!)
