Hypo breeding

herpconsultants2 Feb 23, 2004 07:12 PM

Just a few pics of one of our male hypo's breeding only 5 minutes ago (01.15 GMT). To be honest, sometimes I look at them and think they're the same sort of mutation as the caramel albinos, but who knows? They may be 'normals' - but I doubt it!!

Whatever, I was so happy to see this mating - I have been waiting for two years for this day. Even to get a healthy bunch of babies would make me very happy!

Is hypomelanism a recessive gene?

Jeff Clark Feb 25, 2004 01:07 PM

Linda,
. The Darin Bell/East Bay Vivarium Hypo bloodline has been bred several times and it does reproduce like a heritable simple recessive trait. This bloodline is a litttle strange in that most of the snakes do not look especially hypomelanistic at birth but do become extremely hypomelanistic looking as they age and grow. Perhaps some of the other hypo looking BRBs carry a heritable simple recessive trait but AFAIK none of them have been proven through breedings. It is possible that some of the snakes which look hypomelanistic could have different genetic coding so that they will breed through as a simple recessive trait but not be compatible with the Darin Bell/East Bay bloodline.
