Made a new friend tonight...

boidsntegus Feb 23, 2004 08:50 PM

My little buddy finally realized I didn't want to eat him! After a week of huffing and puffing, he let me hold him without a struggle. I guess we kinda bonded. He slept on my chest, climbed up my shoulder, etc. He licked me all over my face and hands, it seemed like he was taking an accounting of who I was! Incredible. About an hour after I put him back in his home, I reached in and gave him a scratch on the head with no complaint! Always before he would puff up and kinda move away. Anyway, I just wanted to share my first human/tegu bonding experience with you guys since you have all helped me so much!

Congrats. Once thing I love about Tegus is once they get over the initial fear thing, they become inquisitive about everything. That's the next step.

Thanks. Let me ask you, is it common for them be sluggish for a few weeks after hibernation? He is eating, although not with the bottomless pit appetite I hear most tegus have. He is plump, and he'll eat the equivalent of 4-5 crickets and grape sized ball of ground turkey. It is almost 12" and all the temps are good, I suspect this is normal but want another opinion.

I think it differs from Tegu to Tegu. If there is one thing I have learned working with the tegus and monitors is that nothing is specific to a species or type, but specific to the lizard itself. I wouldn't be too concerned. His appetite will probably pick up soon. As long as he is maintaining a fairly good weight, it should be fine. I know the red that I have has an insatiable appetite, but my black and white picks.

Congratulations! Sounds like your new friend is settling in nicely with you. It's really amazing how inter-species friendships develop. I'm jealous, of course, as my two are still sound asleep. But it shouldn't be too long now. I spend more time than you can imagine checking out the substrata, hoping to see something MOVE!!!
