sterilite is bad

scapelli Feb 23, 2004 11:30 PM

this is not my opinion, I love the stuff. I'm so glad that you guys turned me on to sterilite containers, they are awesome. I just wanted to share something from a yahoo corn snake group. Someone had talked about keeping adult corns in a 10 gallon aquarium because it was cheap and easy to clean. I suggested a 22 gallon sterilite for 8 bucks at walmart. You wouldn't believe the ass they made of me. One guy said you can't do it because you can only drill holes from the inside out or the snake will cut itself. I was also told they are a bad idea because they will melt from the basking lamp that the corn snakes need. One guy took the sarcastic route and said "I keep my snakes in a ziplock bag with a hole cut in it and I breathe warm air into it a couple times a day". So after humiliating me, they recommended the newbies use 10 gallon glass aquariums. I guess I just think its funny, and wanted to thank everyone on here again for how much you've all tought me, and how much we all share :] Thanks again everybody. I can't begin to say how thankful I am that kingsnake.com exists
oh yeah, I just bought another 22 gallon sterilite tub today for our newest snake :P

Please point me in the their direction, and I'll gladly put them where they belong

Idiots. Sterlite work awesome. With drilling the holes, how hard is it to get a sharp bladed knife and trim up where the holes were drilled? I tell you, it took me about 5 minutes to set up tanks that are more cost efficient, just as attractive, and a helluva lot cheaper than those cheap aquariums from petco or petsmart that many other people buy. They are also more escape proof (IMO) if you rig them up right. As for melting, I havn't had one melt yet. Some people are just idiots. One person probably said something about it and the other just jumped in head first without thinking. Take it easy, and keep it up with sterlite. WE know the right way

I used to drill my sterilite containers (yes, from the inside out)...Then I picked up a cheap woodburner from the craft section of Wal*Mart. Now I just melt my way through. It is SO much faster, makes a nice clean hole, and I don't run the risk of cracking anything (which I used to do every so often). You do need to do it outside, though. Or at least in a very well-ventilated area.
As for the yahoos on yahoo...I'd say let's go over there and gang up on them...but they are probably not worth the effort.
On the other hand...If y'all decide to get a posse together...count me in!!!! :D

Good idea! As for the yahoos, they are corn snake people. They are already being punished by keeping the white mouse of the reptile trade lol.

I would never go back to glass aquariums for my BPs. Tanks suck the big one for holding humidity in. Sterilite all the way~!

Don't worry, that kind of stuff happens here sometimes too...

Ask them how thier snakes are surviving temperatures high enough to melt plastic...

Sure, it you got the lamp in the wrong place it could melt, but is that worse than having a glass aqaurium shatter for the same reason?

I personally don't use sterilite because I found some nicer containers at Office Depot that are more expensive but very clear and come with lid that's very secure. They're still way cheaper than a cheap aquarium and pre-made aquarium lid.

Yeah I remember that group I think. I remember when I was there a lot of people where "You have to feed live because anything else is unnatural" I didn't stay long.

scapelli Feb 25, 2004 07:25 PM

that's the one, they are STILL having that conversation. They told me that I don't deserve to have snakes and I should get a goldfish because I "can't come to terms with the fact that snakes are carnivores". I guess they think if I want a burger, I should go kill the cow myself, who knows. They're funny, a lot of them don't approve of vet visits, worming, etc, because snakes have worms naturally and its not our place to change that. Medical treatment is "bad" just like the sterilite. But there are a FEW people on there who are open minded and really do need help, and a select few that actually want to help.

So, do they keep their snakes in the back yard and just let mouse out loose for them? Keeping them enclosed would be unnatural too. Good greif.
