Accuracy on info from an older snake book?

nechushtan Feb 24, 2004 12:52 AM

I've been reading "Snakes: the keepers and the Kept" by Kauffeld and came across several things:
1) someone had their Bullsnakes triple in size on a diet of steak that had been rolled in rat hair (with occasional full mouse suppliments). Is this an ok practice?
2) It also mentions using chicken parts and other f/t meats as dietary suppliments. What are people thoughts on this?
3) It talks about getting bullsnakes to be 5' at one year old... Is this still happening for people?

Just thought I'd see what others thought.

Over the years I have seen numerous folks try and improve on a diet of whole frozen thawed rodents for various types of snakes and to date have yet to see any improvement in a steady diet of captive raised healthy rodents.

Can you feed other types of food to your pits. most definitely. A number of years ago I used to feed chicks to a lot of our snakes, but about 15 years ago stopped that practice when we fiqured out that very little nutritional value was being derived from them by my animals. They also had runny stools and made more of a mess than need be also.

I have a good friend that fed his burmese python store bought whole fryers when he ran short of rabbits etc. But this was only in a crunch.

But bottom line you are best off feeding a steady ration of domestic produced rats and mice for maximum growth and health of your animals.

Good Luck,

I agree with John 100%. In 40+ years of keeping and feeding Herps I have not found anything that improves on f/t rodents from a good source. I get mine from The Mouse Factory; vacuum sealed and perfect sizes. BTW John--you keep posting pictures like the one above and you're going to get a pair of those in my snake room!!!!! They look awesome!!!!
