Unfortunate loss

4everherpn Feb 24, 2004 01:15 AM

My baby RES that I held rescued after someone chopped its front claws off with a weedeater died today. I guess last night while I was asleep one of the rocks in the tank fell down and wedged him in the water. I failed to check on him this morning because I was running behind. I came back from my classes and decided to check on my herps before I went to work. Low and behold I saw him wedged on the side of the tank with his mouth wide open and motionless. I feel like a jackass.

Moral of the story...use floating wood instead of rocks and always check your herps.

A weedeater? That's awful...at the very least, you can take solace in the fact that your RES had a much, much better life with you than it did previously. Please don't feel like a jackass. It's the type of thing that could happen to any of us. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope that you don't continue to beat yourself up about it. *sending you a big hug*

Next time try using aquarium grade silicone and adhere your rocks to each other. Just make sure you allow lots of time to cure properly.

I once had a turtle trap that got covered with water after a big rain. When I pulled it out, a RES was inside with mouth open. He survived. After that, now all my traps float.

Thanks for your support. It seems that with death comes new life. I am about to bring home a rat snake with an eye infecction. I have been treating him for weeks and he seems to be ready to come to my care at home. The man I was caring for it for told me that I could keep him. I still think I'll get another little guy to replace him. He was a cute turtle.
