MITES, MITES, MITES...............?

lazandlouie Feb 24, 2004 02:03 AM

I recently noticed mites in my little frilled dragons aquarium yesterday, a friend said they look like baby crickets, but i'm pretty sure he's wrong, i put her in another cage for now, but does anyone know what could be causing these damn things, are they harmless, does my frilled dragon have mites now, or are they just hanging out like ants do? Thanks any and everyone!!

It could be mites, but it could be other things too--baby crickets, or substrate bugs (wood mites even)--what color are they--are they in the substrate or on the frillies (look in the frill.

They are in the substrate (something called desert blend) and they dont even bother my frilled dragon, and he opened his mouth bc he was scared and i didnt see anything in their either. And another thing is i dont have any wood in his cage (bc i just recently cleaned all my cages out) just a big flower type of thing a big rock and a bowel, although his cage is surrouned by a big wood shelf type of thing that was in my back yard for sometime. So i hoped that help you think of something, do you know how i can get rid of them permanently? Thanks a lot!!

I would guess baby crickets then. If you feed adult crickets in the enclosure, a lot of the time females come in with eggs and lay them in enclosures. Or left over ones can breed in the enclosure. What I do to avoid this is I do not buy the biggest size cricket--I order "prewing" instead of adults. It really helps--still happens sometimes, but much less.
