Savannah Together

hudsonjackass Feb 24, 2004 06:05 AM

Hi, i was wondering if i could keep a one month old hatchling savannah monitor with about a 14 inch one. I have put them together and observed them and the big one shows no aggression to the little one. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

A newly hatched bosc monitor is about 2.5 inches total length. By the time you see them in a petstore at 5-10 inches they are anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months old already, after all they are all imported and the average size of a 1 yr old in the wild is only 13 inches if I can remember. These are just general sizes as they can grow really fast in captivity as in to 40 inches in length in a years time. Two of mine years ago were bought at 6 inches long, they were probably around 6-15 weeks at that point. If they were bred in captivity it would be easier to tell how old they are, and the quality of the animals would be 100% better.
If they get along then fine, if they are eating and acting completely normal then fine leave them together, they have a much better chance of working out a relationship when smaller and younger.

You said yours was probly 6-15 weeks. How do you know this since they are all wild caught? Are you guessing?

LOL sorry man but had to do that haha

They hatch at 2.5 inches, man I hope he means SV lenght, or they would be the worlds shortest monitor hatchlings. Heck my V.kingorum, caudolineatus, gilleni, storrs, pilbara, hatchlings are all longer than that. FR

They are a total of 5 inches or less at hatching according to Daniel Bennett and Ravi.

Besides I wouldnt be too far off at 15 weeks (give or take), thats almost 4 months. I also went by an educated guess from the guy I bought one from, he bought them straight off of the ship. One I have no idea, he came from a petstore.

What is the size difference? If they are similar sizes, then I would say its ok, but if they are different sizes I wouldn't, too much chance of one hurting the other. Also make sure they have a big enough cage with enough hide boxes and basking spots. If you do this, keep a real close eye on them.

They are in a 55 gallon, and arent too big. they have plenty of room and hide spaces, along with basking. I've been putting them together daily and watching and they seem fine. While they are seperated i have the smaller one inside a small plastic cage inside the 55 gal. So maybe they be used to the scent.
