being mean or was he protecting me?

conodor Feb 24, 2004 06:58 AM

I have 2 beardies in 1 cage and they are about 8 months or so(had since october) then we purchased another one much smaller and put him in a diffrent cage.

i am trying to get them adjusted to being held. the smaller one, who has a foot missing and 1/2 his tale gone.(girlfriend had to get him, she felt sorry) well he's very aggresive. i try to grab him out and he bites me. well each day i hold him for about 10 minutes hoping he'll stop that soon.

well the largest of the 3 was out at the same time, (normally not) my gf put him on my leg, i was laying on the bed and the baby was on my chest. the baby started to walk up towards my face... don't really know why. all of a sudden the larger one comes running from my legs and nips at the baby.

so i don't know if the larger one was thinking the baby was going to nip at me... wich he coud have.haha or if he was just being mean. at any rate, i won't be holding those 2 at the same time anymore.

*sorry it got long just wanted to be descriptive)

I think neither, he was being a bigger beardie who saw a smaller moving item and probably interpreted him as food. BD's will eat a significantly smaller BD when given the chance by their hard wired drive to eat. If you were smaller than him he'd probably try and eat you to.

Agreed, if it's moving and will fit in the mouth it must be food. One of mine tried to eat the cat (which is actually about twice it's size) a couple nights ago.

The morale of these stories: Don't keep two beardies of different size together, and don't let them "play" with each other. To them it's not playing, it's deadly serious. Actually, don't keep two beardies together at all, if you can avoid it. At 8 months old, you should definitly not have 1 female and 1 male together, as they will try to breed, but they female is way too young to lay eggs. Two males will start fighting, and the only "safe" combination is two females. Even with two females, they might start to fight and will need to be separated.

Honestly... I think the bigger dragon wanted to eat the smaller one. *Never* put dragons together that are different in size. My adult male killed a baby dragon once... right in front of my eyes and I didn't have time to stop him - it was over in a split second and he crusched the babies head. It was horrible and nothing you want to experience...

ok sounds like he was just alittle hungry. normally i just hold them one at a time but my gf was doing some cleaning on the cages and the larger one didn't want to sit on her shoulder much longer so she put her on the bed with me. that's when it all went down.

it was very fast and i right away put the smaller one back in the cage... of coures after a few nips from him, i guess he was a bit upset.

they will be kept apart from now on.

thanks for all the info.
