Changing existing Species of Special Concern laws for HLs

Jeff Judd Feb 24, 2004 09:36 AM

Does anybody know how the Fish and Game goes about making up laws? Whoever was responsible for the existing laws regarding Special Concern Species needs to seriously examine the damage it causes, it promotes thousands of deaths to rare animals and plants each year. It should have 3 phases:

phase 1. Protect the plant or animals habitat from development.
phase 2. Protect destruction to the habitat (from roads and dirt bike trails) by placing a barb wire fence around it.
Phase 3. Prevent the plant or animal from take.

I they would intact phase 3 without the other 2 is beyond me. It forces people with a will to help certain species from certain death have their hands tied.

Hey Jeff,
I totally agree with you, areas with large populations of special concern animals, (The Coast horned lizard *cough * cough*) They need special protections in areas with devolpment, like in my area lots of development. I hope they do eventually reconsider the law they have currently.

I think I know a way you might be able to save a few of the coastal HL's destined to be squished. I don't know if this would work but it might be worth a try.
Go to the area to be developed, take a lot of pictures of the Coronatum that are about to be run over by the huge metal bulldozers (picture those too). Start a web site and describe the situation so that those not familiar with the HL's can understand what is going on. Get petitions going to save the HL's. Call the local newspapers and the LA Times to do a big write-up if they will.
Make a list of those that keep HL's and would be willing to "Save" some of those HL's from the imminent crushing metal destruction.
Petition F&G for permits to save some of those HL's by sending them to good homes. Heck, you might even stop some of the building.

I'd be happy to donate webspace and help build the website.

I think we should be able to get something going. I found some good backing this year and have expressed the problems with F&G. The pictures are a great idea, I am going to take a bunch today. The more people we can attract the louder are voice will be, so spread the word.

I think they should let expreinced keepers keep them and breed them and dont people that see one and oh hes so cute, lets keep him and they put them in little 5 gallon cages. Those people make me so mad thats like my stupid retarted friend MXrider129

HLs should not be taken from undisturbed habitats. If they are legal for capture with a license, you should take them from roads and areas planned for development. That way ,if it does die, it came from an area where it would have died anyway. Read through this forum, a 5 gallon is way too small to provide a variety of temperatures and for the HL to comfortably eat ants and move around. Think more along the lines of a 55 gallon instead.
