Choices choices... help me decide!

tygar Feb 24, 2004 09:46 AM

Ok... I am addicted...
Any time I am on my computer now, I'm looking for another snake to purchase.
I have 2 B.P.'s... male&female, and a female corn snake.

I am looking to "expand"...

I would really like a Boa (looking at Columbian b.c.i.)... my HUSBAND would like a JCP.

I would like some help in deciding what to purchase. I can't afford BOTH, at the moment, or I would have them both.

I would love to have some opinions... please???

Mindy

Well, both are really great snakes. For me, it would be a matter of size.

You'll need more space to house a BCI when it's an adult. Some of them get pretty huge but it depends of the ssp. Hog Ilse boas stay nice and small.

Carpets are really cool snakes too. They tend to be out a fair amount of time and are really easy on the eyes. Also, they are fairly aboreal and would make good use of any branches or perches you made available to them.

I don't have mine yet but as soon as the weather gets warm enough he'll be shipped to me.

From everything I've read they are not as mean as their previous reputation has given them. They get 3-6' depending on the type you get, are very heavy bodied and eat like pigs.

I have also read they are not for beginners and are a little more unforgiving as ball pythons as far as temps, humidity, etc.

But boy are they beautiful!! NERD and ProExotics have some good info for you. Check out their sites at the top of the forum.

It's kind of like a blending between ball and corn. They are long, skinny and active, but also have the awesome python characterisics. My JCP never bit me. It's also exciting to watch the color change. I'd reccomend keeping them to anyone, especially after having ball pythons. They have quite similar needs.

I appreciate the responses... please keep them coming. They are giving me a lot to think about.

Boa. I have one boa and 10 BP's. The boa doubles as my garbage disposal, in case the BP's don't eat. She is beautiful and docile, and I wouldn't trade her for anything!

I've got a couple of Boas and they are nice animals, But I really prefer my carpet pythons, I don't have any jungle carpets, which are smaller then your average Boa. But I do have Queensland carpets which are about the same size as a boa but thinner bodied. Personally I think the carpets have more personality and are more interesting to observe. They are more arboreal then the boas and I think are better choices if you are interested in setting up a more naturalistic display with climbing branches and stuff. Temperament wise they are very similar, at least in my experience. But, if you can't have both. My vote would go to the Carpets.
