What snake am I looking for.....

Tigergenesis Feb 24, 2004 10:50 AM

I'm looking for something that would fit comfortably in a 4x2x1 cage. I don't want a thick bodied snake (like a blood python), but something more like a ball python in girth (a tad bigger is okay). Since the cage is only 1 foot high, there isn't much room for climbing structures. So something more terrestrial or even a burrowing species would be good. I don't want the large size of the cage to be a waste on a small species.

I'm open for suggestions...oh yeah - preferrably something readily available in the U.S. pet trade and not too expensive (as I'd love a Black-headed python, but not at that price).

Thanks!

Have you thought about a corn snake? They are not very thick, but they do have some length to them.

Tigergenesis Feb 24, 2004 01:50 PM

I was already planning on getting a corn, but hadn't thought about putting it in the 4x2x1 cage. I was thinking the height was too low and that maybe the length and width would be too much. Now you've given me something to think about.

Thanks!

Some of the smaller Pituophis would do well in that size tank too. They get nice girth, but not too thick. Just pick your species well. Some of the smaller subspecies like the San Diego gophers and what not would work perfectly.

Funny you should mention Pits. I was just looking at some of them online - there's just so many! I read in one place that Bulls get as thick as a can of soda - is this correct? If so are gophers and pines thinner?

Thanks!

Depends on the subspecies. Some big strains of bullsnake can push 8 or so feet. Of course, so do some pines and some gophers. It really all depends on the subspecies you are looking at.

I see that you have the Solomon Island Ground Boas. I just looked at some pics online and what a gorgeous snake. Can you tell me what the adult size is (male vs female) and about how big (girthwise) they get? What size prey might I expect to feed an adult?

Are these one of the egg laying boa species?

Thanks!

Lets see...3-4 feet when grown, not a thick bodied snake like the bloods...more like a BP or a fat corn, with the females being heavier. They are live-bearing, and their requirements are minimal. Check out Jerry Conway's site. He's the expert! Or, visit the Candoia forum here at Kingsnake. They are interesting and unique snakes.

I'm probably not the first person to point this out, but I see this question all the time and I've been meaning to ask.

If you're going to spend somewhere bewteen 50 and a few hundred dollars on a snake, hundreds if not thousands of dollars on food over it's lifetime, and have to care for it for possibly 20 years or more. Why on earth would you decide what to get based on what caging you have laying around rather than deciding what you want then spending a few bucks on an enclosure if it doesn't fit?

Now, I could see if you have a list of snakes you want to get and you decided which of those to get NOW and left the others for later...

Otherwise, this seems a bit like shopping for a new car to fit your leftover seat covers...

Well, I can only speak for myself. I don't have the cage yet. I plan to get a cage this size (Boaphile) to house another herp. Since these cages allow for stacking, I want to add another Boaphile too - just can't decide on the height (11.5 inches or the 17.5 inch model). I think I'd rather go with the 11.5 inch model, but wasn't sure what I could put in it that fit my criteria. I was just looking for ideas as I know there are many snakes out there I've never heard of or seen - for instance the Solomon Island Ground Boa is kind of new to me.
