I have been admiring your black ratsnake since you posted it a while back. It makes me want one (another snake and my wife has threatened to put me, my snakes, and the dog out of the house!). Please tell us more about that snake.

Back in the summer of 2000,a friend of a friend told him of a big black he was seeing oround a brush pile on his newly aquired property.
My friend told him that I was a keeper of snakes and that I would probably like to see it.Three weeks go by and my buddy calls me and says he is going to his friends house and asks me to ride along and maybe see the big rat snake.Of course I tell him that just because he saw it a few times does not mean we will see it and that it was more than likely just passing through his property.
So,we arrive at the house, have a few beers, then the guy starts to show us around. We walk out to a very small pile of brush in the back yard and the guy says this is where he sees the snake. He was standing there with a can of gas to burn the pile.I ask him to let us look around it first. So we start to dis-assemle the brush pile and see nothing until I look down a small hole in the middle of the pile and see the tip of a black tail.
We dig out the snake and it was like WOW what a nice one.He has never bitten since day one,and has really been usefull in helping me to educate others about snakes

I'm glad that the snake wasn't gassed and torched. What's the chances of finding another snake that is wildcaught and that tame? I'd guess pretty slim. I saw a juvi black rat (about two feet long) back in the summer...full of bad attitude. I thought of collecting, but after all the fuss it put up I decided that if it wanted to be left alone that much then more power to it. I hope to see it again someday. Anyway, thanks for sharing.
