Will you help me decide?

tygar Feb 24, 2004 12:06 PM

Ok... I am addicted...
Any time I am on my computer now, I'm looking for another snake to purchase.
I have 2 B.P.'s... male&female, and a female corn snake.

I am looking to "expand"...

I would really like a Boa (looking at Columbian b.c.i.)... my HUSBAND would like a JCP.

I would like some help in deciding what to purchase. I can't afford BOTH, at the moment, or I would have them both.

I would love to have some opinions... please???

Mindy

Both are great snakes. If price is a factor, check for which is cheaper and go with that. Otherwise, flipping a coin is as good a way to decide as any. Good luck.

Well, I am biased towards the Colombian Bci, but I do own carpets as well - both are equally attractive snakes. I have found my boas to be calmer than my carpets in regards to being handled, though the carpets acclimate to it quickly enough. However my carpets are much more active overall than my boas, both in their cages and while being handled. My carpets rarely simply rest in my hands when I have them out but instead are exploring constantly. My boas are more prone to settle down on a warm lap and be still after the initial exploring session.

Depending on where you are located, there may be a reptile show coming up where you could look at several animals in person versus ordering online. Also prices tend to be better at shows and you may just be able to pick up both at the same time. The season is upon us when you will find many more baby boas offered as well - generally starting in April, but I saw some newborns just this past weekend at my local show (northern Virginia). Whichever route you choose in purchasing, be sure to get the healthiest animal you can. If you buy online, go with someone reputable. If you purchase at a show, look the animal over carefully for any signs of parasites or disease. Obvious advise, I know, but bears repeating.

Good luck!

I thought that was pretty well said! I still have a serious "soft spot" for Jungle carpets, and, had great success breeding them,but,boas....boas are in my blood!(whereas many of my Jungle carpets were just AFTER my blood! they really are great animals tho!)

I appreciate the responses... really gives us something to think about.
Please, keep them coming! I need all the help I can get.

As far as shows, the only show that is REMOTELY near me is the Havre de Grace show, in Maryland.

I have a couple breeders in mind, but my first choice is Steven, at Jungle Mist reptiles. I purchased from him in the past, and he has been great.

I appreciate all your help,

Mindy

Steve aka JungleMist is a great guy to talk/work/buy from. I know he will treat you right, and help you make an educated decision on your animal of choice.

As far as the choice between a carpet or a bci..I would go with a bci...No real reason other then I prefer boas over pythons..

Good luck with your decision
