Nosey Be color question

1086i Feb 24, 2004 01:03 PM

Not too familiar with Nosey Be coloration. Are the bright blue animals that are seen in ads listed as the sire "fired up"? Most animals I see for sale are more of a green/blue. Are the bright blue animals the duller green/blue when they're not fired up, or is what you see "at rest" their normal color? thanks for any info

I'm not too well versed on panthers coloration..So you more experienced panther keepers help me out. From what I understand, there are Nosey Be's and Nosey Be Blues. Granted, both come from the same island but two colorations occur. The duller green/blue is from just the plain Nosey Bes. The Nosey Be Blues usually have that beautiful powder blue hue. Some breeders will fire their chams up to get them to produce more vibrant colors, but i don't think such a dramatic change is possible. I'm no expert on panthers by far, so this is just word of mouth. Panther keepers help me out on this.

As with all panthers, it varies. You have to look at the father and the mother's father to get an accurate idea of what yours will turn out to be. If you want a nosey be with deep intense blue, I would recomend getting it from a well established breeder. I know that Kammerflauge(sp?) creations has some gorgous nosey be's, but the main thing is to see the father of your potential offspring and the mother's father. Some nosey bes are green, some are solid blue with no red or green or yellow, some have bright red and yellow eye turrets, and some red speckling too, it just varies. Good luck!

Nosy Be's are the locale of panther chameleon, such as Sambava, Tamatave and others. Nosy Be "Blues" are just a more descriptive name for the same thing.... Wild chameleons from Nosy Be are typically more of a greenish blue color and some have various amounts of red also. Through selective breeding of the purest blue animals, most or all of the green can be eliminated. Some breeders sell Nosy Be's that still have a good amount of green and red in them, while others keep only Nosy Be's with little or no blue and try to keep it that way by breeding females with similar color traits. Nosy Be's are one of the few panther chameleons that look their best when they're NOT "fired up" (meaning excited over seeing usually another male or a female). Their day in day out color is typically a light or medium blue. Often in the days after breeding, they stay a bright blue color, and also in the hours after seeing another male. Some Nosy Be's when fired up, will turn a lighter blue color and some turn darker blue. When picking out a Nosy Be, the best way to know what to expect is by seeing a good picture of the father (or seeing him in real life if possible) and knowing the mother's background, and also if possibile, getting ahold of a picture of her brother. That will give you a good idea of what to expect. You could always just ask the breeder where the mother came from, and try to find a refrence from that source. Nosy Be's continue to be probably my favorite locale of panther chameleon. The good looking blue color day in day out is the reason.

This is the coloration as it appears in the wild.
Salvador is at least 4 years old but probably much older since he was caught as an adult.
His coloration stays pretty much like this all day long and is a very bright teal color.
I will post one of him fired up by a lady cham and you will notice his eye turrets and face take on more orange/red coloration.

He takes on a more vivid red/orange on the face and eye turrets but the bright teal color stays pretty much the same. Sometimes it is a bit brighter than other times.
I tend to like the teal/aqua coloration best. I do not like them too blue nor too green and I have seen both extremes.
More often you see them too green with little or no blue coloration.
