albino x normal

do you ever get maybe 1 albino in the clutch if you get lucky? or do you have to have an albino x het to get albinos? or does that just increase the amount of albinos that might come out?

albino x normal= all 100% het albino

albino x het albino = on average 50% albino 50% het albino

het albino x het albino = on average 25% albino 25% normal 60% het albino [refered to as 66% possible het albino.]

het albino x normal = 50% het albino and 50% normal.

Maybe you thought that a "normal looking" will give you albinos. "normal looking" one being a het.
Took me sometime to learn it too.

myabe I could get lucky and one normal just might have the gene but that would be like winning the lotto right!

so this won't pay off as fast as I hoped, oh well.

You'd be a very lucky lottery winner to get an albino out of crossing a het or albino with a normal. You need 2 hets or an albino and a het to produce them. If you breed a het albino male to a normal female, you will need to keep back all the females and breed them to the het male to get albinos. It takes a couple years to get the females to adult size, so it is not a quick process.

thanks for all the help. I have a male albino and plenty of normal females, so I will just have to keep a bunch and wait till they get big or buy one 100% het female soon.

Both parents have to at least carry the gene for any of the babies to get two copies of it as needed to be an albino.

However, there is some chance that a presumed normal animal might really be a het that you didn't know of. I've heard of at least two cases where known albino gene males where bred to assumed normal females but an albino baby exposed the fact that the female was really a het. My estimate on the possibility of a normal being a hidden het is that it could be as high as 1 in 100 but probably lower, maybe 1 in 1,000.

No, you would get 100% hets when you cross an albino with a normal.

In a simplified manner, the each adult passes one gene to its offspring. A normal can only pass normal genes. The Albino only passes albino genes. In order to 'appear' albino, you need two albino genes.

I hope this helps.

If you cross an albino w/ a het you would get 50% albinos and 50% hets.

If you cross a het w/ a het you get 25% albinos w/ 2 hets (66% hets since you can't tell) and one normal (also 66% het since you can't tell.)

Misty...I've got a discussion of genetics on my site, which I will link below. As the others have said, you will not get albino offspring from an albino to a normal cross....unless the superduper unbelievably rare instance of a mutation of just the right gene, or unless your "normal" is actually a het an you don't know it.

NOW to this misconception...I see so many times on here people talking about 1 out of 4 will be so and so, 2 out of 4 will be so and so. That is simply not how it works. Punnet squares for one trait just so happen to have 4 boxes, but they will never tell you how many out of 4 babies will express a given trait. What they do tell you is the percent chance an offspring will have of inheriting the trait. Its a subtlty I know, but important. SO to say correctly, in a het to het breeding, each offspring has a 25% chance of being homo dominant (normal, for albinism), a 25% chance of being homo recessive (an albino), and a 50 % chance of being a het. Since the normal and the hets are phenotypically indistinct (they look the same), they are referred to as 66% hets. Check out my page for an in depth discussion on genetics.

Yep, sorry about that. Albino X albino would give you all albinos. You may want to pick up a het female or a possible het female, and you'll have a chance at an albino in your first generation. Good luck!
