You might want to review this report from a recent USGS survey: http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/BFS/main/tje/HTML/RESU.htm - check th link to Phrynosoma coronatum, you will get some more information and the report does include general locations in the reserve, much of the habitat for this wonderful lizard in San Diego has been destroyed as has their food source (however recently they have been observed eating non-native ant species so there is hope...) they aren't as easy to find as they once were. Usually you are looking for loose sand or mixed sand and gravel with sparser vegetation AND ANTS, that's what they love to eat, native harvester ants are their favorite food.... There is one other location where I used to find them commonly and since the habitat is being destroyed as we speak I don't mind giving it out, check the south facing slope of Black Mountain, there is a road that leads to microwave towers on top of the mountain and they were common there in years past, as the entire area is being developed I fear that they will not be there much longer. Hope this helps and good luck with your report!
