Back to the ant thing again....

ss Feb 24, 2004 01:42 PM

I have thought of buying red harvester ants from Uncle milton the company famous for the children's ant farms for an alternative food source but have wondered the impact they would have on the ecosystem I have developed. Would they destroy the environment and kill the frogs? ants can be an extremely powerful species. I know better safe than sorry and this is why I have never done anything on the other hand I know that ants exist in the same environment that PDF's do. I guess the real question is would there be any beneficial aspects to introducing an ant colony to a terrarium? Or is the risk factor way too high to even bother?

The would be a pain in the ace if kept in the vivarium, IMO. However I believe ants would be worth culturing if you can get a hold of the right type, pavement ants as I call them are supposed to be pretty good. If my termite culture fails I may give it a shot.

By the way those ants you want to order DO NOT come with a queen and will be dead in about six months or less. If you want to culture, you need a shovel and a jar. have fun.

I heard in Animal Planet that Ant's give them back the poison to the dart frogs.
