*sigh* 15 foot python shot near my hometown.........

muskratman Feb 24, 2004 04:12 PM

.........this weekend a coupla boys were camping and they shot and killed a 15 foot python. it angers me that #1 these young boys were at a public strip pit with a gun in the middle of the night(for those of you who dont know a strip pit is a reservoir made by mining) #2 the owner of the snake has not yet come forward and #3 the newspaper didn't even bother to identify the snake, they even kinda made the boys out to be heroes

for those of you who would like to see it, here is the link to the story.

The kids did the right thing, they took a dangerous foreign invader out of the local ecosystem.

i agree with the idea that it did not belong in the ecosystem, however, these are junior high kids(i know cause i go to high school and ive seen them around), they had no business taking a gun to mackeys pit(its a public camp site), also, neither of them is old enough to drive and there are proper authorities to call.
it is my opinion that the snake could have been removed just as easily and sent to a local zoo.
anyway it isn't the killing of the snake that annoys me so much, its the fact that these KIDS were unsupervised in a camp site with a gun and since they killed a dangerous snake they are heroes. despite the fact that neither of them is licensed to drive(doesn't say that in the article but it was on local news) and they weren't out to hunt anything in season, they just happened to have a gun. they didn't do the right thing, they just wanted a trophy

I completely agree. This could have been dealt with in an entirely differant way. Those kids have no right to be running around a public campsite with guns, especially at night. The article does somewhat make them out as heroes, which is terribley sad. As far as I am concerned, those kids are more of a threat than a python.
