Male or Female?

tegulizards Feb 24, 2004 05:56 PM

I know its virtually impossible to tell the difference without a probing, but I also know that males develop huge jowels. Take a look at Baby and let me know what you think he/she is. I have a pair that Bert sold me as male and female, however I think he labeled them wrong.

Let me know what you think........

Keep in mind large jowels on male are a sexual signal similar to a dewlap or many other visual signals in reptiles. Naturally an animal which is not sexually mature will not have as well developed jowels. That in mind I'd say it looks like an immature male.

Feel for the telltale male "bumps". They are unmistakeable if you find them. Close to the vent in the base of the tail..place your hand over the tegus tail with thumb and middle finger down near the vent. Slide your fingers up toward the dorsal side of the tail and feel for a little "bebe" on each side.
