sad experience

hjk Feb 24, 2004 06:30 PM

I bought a young bearded dragon over the internet. He was to arrive today. When he got here here was dead. He came all the way from florida to pennsylvania. He was supposed to be here around 10:30 am, but fedex never brought him till around 1:50pm. The heat packs were still warm. The people I am getting him from said to ship him back and they would contact me about either a refund or sending me another dragon. This really bites, I was so excited about getting him. I had everything ready for him and everything. I guess these things happen though.

I'm sorry you had to experience that. How depressing and how sad for the little beardie. Well, he's in a much better place now. Was he shipped overnight? If the heat packs were still warm that worries me. I'm going to be shipping a beardie in March for the first time and I would hate for something like this to happen. Was the box wasn't marked "live harmless reptile" or "perishable"? Hopefully he went quickly and painlessly. So sorry.

Beautiful Dragons

Yes he was shipped overnight. The last fedex building he went to before coming here was only about 30 min from my place. That was just alittle before 10am. They didnt get him here till just alittle before 2pm. I live in the country so they have more driving to do and it takes longer than in a city type area. I think for shipping to a place like mine it would be better to do it through USPS overnight. That way it goes straight to the post office in the morning and then the person recieving can pick him up asap. No long ride on the truck before arriving to the destination like this little sweetie did. I was checking the box for the address to send him back last night and found that one of the heat packs was still hot. It was like 9 or 10 pm when I found this.

One question I have is if he is in a styrofoam box that is taped shut how can he get enough air? Wouldnt he suffocate? The box that was in had mesh air vents, but I still dont see how he got air through the styrofoam.

They are supposed to be shipping me a new dragon today. I will get him tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one. I'll let everyone know when he gets here and what condition he is in.

not have them and they were fine, the heat packs (normal animal shipping ones) need air to keep warm, so there was air in the box if the heat packs were still warm. It's possbile be overheated... depending the the packs that they used and how many

Its really a bad time of year to ship, I think some of it has to do with the temp staff that some of the shipping companies have on til April and so many packages. They are rushed and rough.

We are holding one that has to do to PA also, til the weather breaks and the hustle is over.

I did send one out to Arizona, but was almost fanatically in packing him!

My deepest sympathies.

If you dont mind sharing some info,
How old was the BD? How big was it?
What was the low temperature there the night of shipping?
Do you know how long the package was in transit (was it picked up the morning before or at the end of the day)?
Was the box damaged at all?
Was the BD in a deli cup, snake bag or any other container?

Hope things work out better in the future. You may want to contact Bob and Vicki at Dachiu. They are in PA as well and have great BDs at reasonable prices.

He was about 3 months old. He was about 5 inches or so, only had small tail (badly nipped).
I dont know the low temp the night he was shipped, but I do know he came from florida. So most likely the temps were decent.
I am not sure how long it was in transit, I know I didnt get it till almost 2pm (which we expected it to get her around 10:30am)
He was in a cloth bag. two heat packs, both still very warm
The box was not damaged at all.
He was in a styrofoam box that was taped shut. Then in the cardboard box with screen vents on two sides.
