My new pastels...pics

earthpig23 Feb 24, 2004 09:12 PM

here a pic of a pastel male I am getting from NERD. I know not everyone thinks pastels are pretty but I like them. This is just a fun breeding project for the love of the hobby.

Hermin Soler has some quality ones, might want to look into his stock, here's my boy.

Anywho, I hope they throw some nice babies for you.

I looked at the pics for a while, and I can't seem to tell whether it looks like a pastel or not. Usually, they're obvious to me. I see the lighter side coloration, but I have at least one normal with that. Maybe it's the not as faded brown? I don't know... Maybe I'm just confused... ?

joels417 Feb 25, 2004 10:51 AM

I was thinking the same, that's why I told him to check out hermin soler, he has good prices and great looking animals.

Those look like "B" Grade Pastels TO ME.

"B" grade?
Is it even a pastel?

Misskiwi67 Feb 25, 2004 03:26 PM

Looks pastel to me. Maybe not the brightest one I've ever seen, but I most certainly don't see many normals like that. Also, you really want to question NERD's genetics? LOL If its from NERD, I'm sure its a pastel.

NERDgirl Feb 25, 2004 03:54 PM

"Not a pastel" - are you kidding? We would NEVER sell someone a pastel & then send them pics of a snake that clearly wasn't. Come on folks!

Please understand that it's not always possible to take the "best" photo of a snake - the lighting in those pics SUCKS, plain and simple. We don't have an in house "photo set" available at all times.

Additionally, the animal in question was beginning a shed cycle when those photos were taken, and darker than usual.

Just to clear up any "confusion."

No I asked for there best Pastel and this is what I got.

So, is this the best pastel that Nerd had available?

earthpig23 Feb 25, 2004 05:35 PM

First of all I am more than happy with the pics and am sure I'll be more than happy with the snakes. And yes its a pastel. The pics were just some quick pics to give me an idea of what they looked like. Not everyone is going to think WOW I love that snake. Blinky didnt seem to mind and at first neither did joel. I havent seen to many normals with that much yellow but maybe im wrong. My wife likes that it is more yelow amd less faded than most. It isn't obviously the best pastel NERD bred this year cuase it is almost the '04 season and i'm just now getting a '03.
I was just pretty happy with my purchase and couldnt wait till I took my own pics to post. The last time I checked NERD is still one of the top ball python breeders out there and pretty sure they could tell between pastels and normals.

It's I nice looking snake, and I'm not questioning it being a pastel. I'm sure it's easier to tell in person. The coloration in the photo just doesn't seem to jump out at you as immediately being a pastel. I've never had to think about it before. Like you said, that could be due to the photo quality and the snake being in shed...

So are there often pastels that have more 'normal' coloration and is it ever hard to distinguish between the two in a clutch? I have a male pastel that I plan on breeding next year, and one one the females he will be bred to was very bright as a hatchling and, at 3 yrs, is still much yellower than any other normal I have. I know that doesn't necessarily mean that the offspring produced will have similar coloration, but I'm just a bit curious.
Thanks!
