Start with a species that you love and that is not too expensive. As you like boas and ball pythons, start with one of them. I don't consider either terribly expensive, and sometimes you can get free animals from animal rescue organizations or amateur herp society adoption programs.
Search out web sites, books, magazines, etc. that have information on your species. Learn from others on forums, conferences, whatever. Learning from others is less costly in terms of time that figuring out everything from scratch. There is a lot of information in the boa and ball python forum archives here are kingsnake.com.
I'd get a male from one person (maybe a couple of males) and a female from another person and raise them in separate cages. For several reasons, one of which is that sometimes raising a pair in the same cage makes them ignore each other at breeding time. Good luck.
