Tank Size/Filters

kellie23 Feb 24, 2004 10:20 PM

I have one slider, he's just over a year old...I need to get him into a larger tank. I've been told that a 40 breeder tank would be a good size to get...is this true? Also, I need advice on filters. Any info on ones that work better than others or on ones to stay away from would be great!
Thanks,
Kel

a canister filter would be your best bet but they are the most expensive...$60

definitely avoid internal filters as they are not strong enough

a good cheap filter would be an aquaclear 500 which costs about $32 at bigalsonline.com. however, it is a waterfall type filter and some people get annoyed by the waterfall noise.

The basic rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle. Which is measured from the front to back. So you if you have male it could get 10 inches and a female could get to 12 inches. So you are looking at least a 100 gallon tank. The more filtering you can the better. Turtles are messy creatures. Take care Shannon

i bought a half circle looking tank. 46 gallons. and that was $180. and then i bought a fluval 304 for $169. i obviously didnt get a good deal at petsmart. lol. anyway, then i put this mushroom looking thing--that was $29. and some medium sized rocks. and i think that's it. OH, i bought a turtle dock. i forget how much that was. i have to buy a new one right now though. cuz she grew. setting up the fluval 304 was pretty easy. when you look at it...it seems like its going to take forever, but have a friend come over and it's pretty neat. and then i waited like a month and a half to two months to clean the tank and fluval. all i did was get the python siphon ($30?) and then take out half of the water and then put in water. and i got the fluval...rinsed everything. and i was good to go.

I have a RES almost a year old. IT is 3-1/4". I have it in a 29 gallon tank with a few fish. i use the aqua-tech filter with a #3 filter. It works really well. The water is crystal clear. Now it is the waterfall type but it works. If you get or have on then make sure that you check the filter every couple of weeks. The cleaner the filter the cleaner the water.

good luck- curt

I have a 9 month RES, Oregano, he is currently in a 55 Long tank and I use the Hydro-Sponge IV Filter (for 80 gals). I also have guppies, ghost shrimp, plants and a pelco in the tank to help keep it clean. Good luck and God Bless
