Paroedura masobe

lovelyleopards Feb 24, 2004 11:18 PM

I've noticed that there has been a recent influx of imported animals available on the classifieds. Hopefully this will lead to some people having captive breeding success this year or next. It would be spendid to actually see CB babies on the market in the future, although I'm sure they'll be quite pricey. Anyone on here thinking of getting a pair? Just curious.

Well I have been looking for a new gecko, and if I could make some side cash and breed a rare creature that would be great as well, I will be sure to look them up

Sick of seeing someone lie and say they have CB or proven breeders for sale, and if you have been checking the Kingsnake Classifieds, you know who. So do NOT buy any captive bred Paroedura masobe, because it's a lie. Also the prices these people are charging now are unbelievable. They are just selling so cold heartedly to pay their crack debt. $375 a pair! I know the range of how much they are getting them for and $120 a pair is still making good profit. The Malagasy people get 4 American pennies for them from the exporter (most small Phelsuma get them 3 cents and in the U.S. imported Phelsuma are priced too high also); that's as much as I can say. Because of this commercial madness, the species will probably be extinct soon. If you are lackadaisically thinking of purchasing a new gecko, this isn't a good choice, because chances are, it won't make it. Think of how many were D.O.A. and how many died in the unspecialized care of one of these dealers. Believe me, it's not about the money, but if you knew the care these geckos need to live, the geckos for sale probably have not eaten since they left Madagascar and these people are selling them for $195 for pairs. If you insist on buying some, I have an excellent care sheet on them, just email me. Ohh and...be prepared to spend lots of money on caring for them...

I sort of made a mistake with a similar species- the cat gecko. I got a pair, wasn't quite sure what I was doing at first, and now that I have it figured out, my male died of some wierd infection and I can't find any CB ones to replace him. Now I'm stuck with a bunch of guilt and regrets, but some helpful experience too. I'm not saying don't try it, but research the needs of fragile high humidity lizards (like chams and Uroplatus) and have a big reserve of cash for vet bill- and I hate to say it, but expect losses. People need to breed them before they can't be imported any more, and I'm sure it's possible, but it takes an incredible amount of dedication

If Madagascar were to close its doors today species such as P.masobe would eventually later be lost forever! It is essential for the preservation of these geckos that they be bred in captivity. This does not mean, however, that anyone should get them. Only experience keepers who know what they are up against should acquire them. These geckos should be given the utmost respect. They are incredible animals and deserve a shot at life.

If you are an experience keeper, and are reading this, I urge you to give these guys a shot.

Whoever had the care sheet, can you please send it to me? Thanks... I don't plan on getting them soon, but when I am more experienced, might as well do research now.

Yes it is quite sad, Madascar has so many amazing species of animals, too bad it doesn't look good for them. At least people have been having luck breeding Lemurs in captivity

There is an ad in the classifieds for cat geckos! Here is your chance to pair up that female. I hope you are able to get some those guys need to be bred with more regularity in captivity too!

Good Luck,
Steve
