Ceramic Heat Bulbs

ChuUtena Feb 25, 2004 12:29 AM

Does anyone recommend, or not recommend these? I'm replacing my 74w nocturnal lamps sometimes once a month. I'm very upset now because a bulb i bought 3 weeks ago just went out, and it's about 1:30 in the morning and my leos aren't going to get another one until tomorrow afternoon. I know the ceramic bulbs are supposed to last WAY longer than regular bulbs, I just want to know everyone else's experience with them. I just want bulbs that last longer than a month! My daylight bulb I've had since september has lasted that long, but the night bulbs that are on 24/7 don't make the cut. It's just $6 down the pooper every month it seems, and since I have 4 going at any given time, that makes it about..almost $300 a year when I could buy, according to the ads, 4 $20-$30 bulbs and have them last for years. Please let me know! I'm going to have to blow a bunch of money tomorrow regardless!

Ceramic bulbs are great. However you do need to use a thermostat with them. They get very hot. I had a bulb that lasted 6 years, it went out last year and I bought a new one.
Hope this helps

When i was using the bulbs coated with "rare earth phosphors" i had it for 3.5 months and it didn't blow out. The exo terra, flukers, and the ones i just mentioned (forget the name) are very good.

I use a daylight bulb on a timer and a regular blue bulb 24/7 but i will be changing that once i get another timer. So far the blue bulb (my brother is into coloured light bulbs and gave it to me) has lasted a while. Its not specifically a reptile bulb but it works. I'm not sure if putting a light on a timer makes it go out sooner but i'm going to try anyways....

I have 24 geckos in my classroom. All are on undertank heaters (last forever) that are on 24/7 and regular 40 watts on a timer.

Keeps em happy.

I have UTH's on all the tanks, but my bedroom is very cold in the winter, so I also need to have the tanks warm themselves. I've been using the t-rex 75w black night lights and apparently those just don't agree with me.

On a whole other note, I had a dream about this thread last night!! And I was reading the replies, and there was one from RedQuake (you must post alot and have jumped into my subconscious lol ) and you was telling me that according to shipping from Canada that it would be cheaper for me to buy ceramic bulbs from some place online. Yeah, creepy. Thanks for the advice everyone!

get into the dreams of guys in my area LOL.......without it being creepy hahaha. Ya i have been posting alot lately. Thought i'd be to busy to be on here but its amazing how i can find the time (usually in the early am) to sit on my butt and read posts for a few hours. I'm just getting ready to meet a friend up at an exotic animal store....then out for lunch. I need to get some more suppliments and check out the prices for a few items i'm thinking of getting. Then i'm coming home to do the second coat of paint on my new bedroom set........so i probably won't be back on here until later tonight. I don't know if my dream advice helped or not but thats pretty cool LOL, i've also been having very vivid dreams lately.....some including family, some of the shows i watch and my geckos...specifically them either escaping or finding eggs before getting a incubator.

hehehe
