California Hognoses?

jasonmc Feb 25, 2004 02:20 AM

I was talking with a fella out here in Los Angeles, Ca. He tried telling me that he has come across hognose snakes in the surrounding foothills ( Lake Castaic to be exact). This sounded a little strange to me considering I thought they only lived in the mid. west, the south, and the east coast.
I didn't try arguing with him because I didn't have the facts. I wanted to bring this to you experts to let me know. How far west is the hognoses range?
I currently have a business out here removing unwanted venomous reptiles from private dwellings. I have come across many things but never a hognose. I figure if it was a hognose, maybe it was somebodys pet that was released or escaped.
Thanks for any information.
Jason

I believe their range extends as far west as the eastern portion of AZ. I would guess what the guy is seeing are gopher snakes.

The Mexican hognose ranges into a small part of South East Arizona. The Plains into New Mexico. That's as far West as they get.
