Newbie Help Required for Red Spotted Newts!

JMonkeyJ Feb 25, 2004 03:31 AM

I need some help with my two new newts, mainly because they don't eat and they don't do anything at all!

My setup is as follows...

The tank is about 14 inches by 8 inches by 8 inches. It has a ventilated top. The tank bottom is filled (about an inch deep) with finely chipped wood bark that is slightly damp and ‘musty’ and was recommended by pet store ‘expert’.

I have added a plastic water pool that is half buried in the woodchips and is about an inch deep. Water was purified using fish water purifier. There is also a rock in the pool for them to climb onto. Finally, there is large bit of wood bark in there which is slanted against the side of the tank for them to climb on/hide under.

They are in a room with not much sunlight (but plenty of artificial light) and the temp is around 68-70f during the day and a bit less at night. I have also tried by a window with more sunlight but it was a little colder (about 61).

Now comes the problem. They don’t do anything. I put them in on the first day (four days ago) and they both walked about and had a drink of water but now either sit still under the big bit of bark or burrow themselves right out of sight under the bark.

I have put small crickets into the tank (3 or 4) but the newts don’t seem interested. I have even seen them crawl over one of the newts faces without them doing anything!

I am concerned because on the first day they seemed pretty active and perhaps I am doing something wrong. Any suggestions would really set my mind at ease!

Many thanks, in advance…

Thanks, but that page seems to back up pretty much what I have tried to do. What I am after is some 'tips' to get them a bit more active and eating their food. I am worried that they are simply going drop dead soon.

Thanks
