I need habitat help!

Swanky_Tito Feb 25, 2004 07:02 AM

My friend and I are from Lake Placid, New York, and we're helping our friends here in Upstate New York with the development of a new museum. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, the 'official title' of the museum, really is depending on us. We need help getting together as much information as we possibly can on lots and lots of animals. So, if anybody can give us any information regarding cage substrates, temperature, humidity, etc etc on any of the following animals, we'd be eternally greatful!

just a few of the animals are:
eastern redback salamander
two line salamander
spotted salamander
eastern newt
mudpuppy
bullfrog
mink frog
wood frog
american toad

Thanks so much!

All of these are amphibians. Translation: They need high humidity. One of the best things I can recommend is that you grab the Peterson Field Guide for Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern North America. It goes into wonderful detail about where (and,in most cases, when) you would expect to find them. Extrapolate from this and you oughta be able to craft convincing captive habitats for them.

If you can model the water flow of their natural environment, you'll have a good part fo the battle covered. Heating and lighting for amphibs is easy, as is food, but, humidity can be a pain in the butt... They need to be kept moist, without encouraging mold.
